Quarantine Free Travel - New South Whales
New rules are in place for fully vaccinated people in NSW.
You are fully vaccinated if you have had:
- 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccination where two doses are the complete course, or
- 1 dose of a COVID-19 vaccination where a single dose is the complete course, or
- you have a medical exemption.
Children under 16 years of age who are not fully vaccinated can generally follow the rules for fully vaccinated people so long as they visit certain businesses with a fully vaccinated member of your household.
For people over the age of 16 who are not fully vaccinated, more rules and restrictions apply.
You are not fully vaccinated if you have had:
- only 1 dose of a COVID-19 vaccination that requires 2 doses to complete the course, or
- no doses of a COVID-19 vaccination.
You are defined as fully vaccinated if you have had the complete number of doses required for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Children under the age of 12 who are not vaccinated but are accompanied by a fully vaccinated person over the age of 18 are defined as fully vaccinated for quarantine purposes.
If you have a medical contraindication you are permitted to enter the NSW community after clearing border control. You must also follow the NSW Health Guidelines for Recent Fully Vaccinated Arrivals.
You may be asked to produce vaccination evidence to a police officer.
Masks
All people over the age of 12 must wear a face mask:
- in indoor areas (e.g. while shopping, when at a library)
- in indoor areas of common property of apartment buildings
- at a public transport waiting area
- while on public transport
- if you are working at a hospitality venue and dealing directly with members of the public
- on an aircraft when the aircraft is flying above NSW and in the airport.
Exemptions are available. Learn more about face mask rules.
Vaccination evidence
Vaccination evidence includes:
- Documentation providing evidence that you have received the complete number of doses required for a COVID-19 vaccine.
- COVID-19 - Proof of vaccination and medical exemption (PDF 60.04 KB)
Coming in from overseas and going to another location in Australia
If you arrive in NSW from overseas and you are not fully vaccinated with a TGA recognised COVID-19 vaccine, you must go into quarantine for 14 days before continuing your journey to another state or territory. After this isolation period you can transit domestically and travel home.
Be advised that selected airlines, like Cathay Pacific, require transiting passengers to be fully vaccinated. Passengers who are not fully vaccinated, may be subject to denied boarding.
Follow the quarantine rules for fully vaccinated people if you are fully vaccinated.
Across Australia, states and territories have their own quarantine rules in place. Some require approval to travel across borders from NSW, or even a second 14 day isolation period when you arrive.
For the latest information visit Australian Interstate Quarantine.
Find more information for transiting passengers.
If you are fully vaccinated with a TGA recognised COVID-19 vaccine or a child aged under 12 years you do not have to go into mandatory quarantine. You must follow the NSW Health Guidelines for Recent Fully Vaccinated Arrivals for 14 days or until a negative COVID-19 test is received after 7 days.
